A few days ago, I was on a call with a friend - check him out here and we were talking about his creative journey and how he was creating a few reels and exploring his curiosity, and he reminded me of the famous Denzel Washington quote, "You hang around the barbershop long enough—sooner or later you will get a haircut."
I remember watching the commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania in 2011 countless times - I mean, personally, Steve Job’s 2005 Stanford speech made me fall in love with technology s and kickstarted my love of commencement speeches.
So what did Denzel mean by "if you hang around the barbershop long enough—sooner or later you will get a haircut!
Success often comes to those who consistently show up, engage, and immerse themselves in environments where opportunities may arise.
Just as someone frequenting a barbershop is bound to get a haircut eventually, someone persistently engaged in the spaces where opportunities arise is likely to catch their break. It's a metaphor that underscores the idea that success is not merely a stroke of luck but a result of deliberate and continuous effort.
This philosophy aligns with the broader concept of proactively creating one's opportunities. It's not just about waiting for luck to strike but actively positioning oneself in spaces where potential opportunities may unfold.
This could be through networking, honing skills, or staying committed to a passion or interest.
I was hired partially in my current job because they liked this newsletter—something I started a few years ago—and my writing was there when I was asked to send my sample. Writing increases my luck surface area!
