We all are familiar with the age-old proverb that states, “We become that which we dread the most.” But what exactly does all of this entail?
This term is stating, at its most fundamental level, that our worries have the potential to affect our life as well as the behaviour that we engage in.
When we have a fear of anything, our minds tend to dwell on that item more frequently, and we become more intent on finding ways to avoid it. Because of this, we might start acting in an excessively cautious manner, or even become preoccupied with the goal of avoiding whatever it is that we fear.
When we put so much emphasis on avoiding our anxieties, it’s possible that we end up becoming the very thing we were trying to steer clear of in the first place.
“Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.”
— Bertrand Russell
For instance, if you have a fear of failing, you might strive to steer clear of any circumstances that have even the remotest chance of bringing it about.
This can result in a lack of ambition as well as a reluctance to take risks and experiment with new things. As a consequence of this, you run the risk of becoming just as mired in mediocrity and complacency as if you had been unsuccessful.
“Too many people are thinking of security instead of opportunity. They seem to be more afraid of life than death.”
— James F. Byrnes
On the other hand, if we are able to conquer our phobias, we will have a better chance of realising our ambitions and becoming successful. We can find the strength to conquer our anxieties and accomplish what we set out to do if we first acknowledge them and then challenge ourselves to attempt new things and take calculated risks.
It is essential to keep in mind that fear is a normal response to threatening situations and that feeling terrified is acceptable.
Nonetheless, it is necessary to have an understanding of the power that fear possesses and the effect that it may have on our lives. We are able to break free from the cycle of fear and develop into the people we aspire to be if we are prepared to face our anxieties head-on and challenge ourselves to take calculated risks.
